Sony Xperia Z Ultra
Sony Xperia Z UltraReview
With no less than 30 devices in their Xperia smartphone range, Sony certainly doesn’t shy away from releasing multitudes of Android devices. This year’s Xperia Z flagship is competing well against the heavyweights from Samsung, HTC and Nokia, while other phones such as the Xperia SP and Xperia E give consumers options in the lower reaches of the market. And let’s not forget tablets like the Xperia Tablet Z, praised by many for its slick design and water resistance.
Design
If I had to describe the Xperia Z Ultra in two words, it would be ‘gorgeously massive’. On the one hand, Sony has crafted an astoundingly beautiful smartphone, combining a slim design with premium materials. On the other, the device is ridiculously large, pushing the boundaries of what can be considered a phone, and making it somewhat hard to use.
The model I received for review was deep black, and thanks to Sony’s efforts in hiding elements such as sensors and speakers, the clean design looks undeniably classy and premium. The front speaker and microphone are kept to small lines at the top and bottom, while the main speaker is just another line on the bottom edge. Branding is also kept to a minimum, with a few Sony logos, NFC logo and Xperia logo scattered around the otherwise bare design.
The biggest selling point of the Xperia Z Ultra is its massive, 6.4-inch 1080p display, which is perfect for content consumption. Sony hasn’t specified exactly what technology is used in this display, but my instinct tells me it’s a larger version of their e-IPS TFT LCD panel used on the Xperia Z. e-IPS is essentially a cost-friendly version of full IPS panels, with reduced viewing angles but largely the same color output and clarity as you’d expect from a higher-end display. At 1920 x 1080, this display comes in with a pixel density of 344 pixels-per-inch (PPI).
Performance:
Like a number of flagship smartphones that have been recently released, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra incorporates Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 SoC as its main processing powerhouse. This particular model features a 2.2 GHz quad-core Krait 400 CPU, a 450 MHz Adreno 330 GPU and a QDSP6V5A Hexagon DSP at 600 MHz. The DSP is a low-power core that assists the CPU in music playback and media decoding/encoding, and helps keep the overall energy footprint of the chip low.
Camera:
The camera department is where the Sony Xperia Z Ultra is found lacking. The Galaxy Note 3 features the same camera as the Galaxy S4, featuring a 13MP rear shooter, with a BSI sensor, LED flash, zero shutter lag and Smart Stabilization. Like the Galaxy S4, the Galaxy Note 3 camera is loaded with features, including Drama Shot, Sound & Shot, Animated Photo, Eraser, Best Photo, Best Face, Beauty Face, HDR, Panorama, and more.
The Sony Xperia Z Ultra on the other hand features an 8MP rear camera, with no flash, which means that while the device takes pretty good pictures in well-lit conditions, low light photography isn’t possible. The Sony Xperia Z Ultra camera is similar to what you’d find on tablets, so the camera department is where the identity crisis of the Xperia Z Ultra comes into play.
Both devices feature a 2MP front camera.
Even though the Xperia Z Ultra is the larger of the two smartphones, the device features a smaller 3,050 mAh battery, compared to the 3,200 mAh battery of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. The Galaxy Note 3′s battery is also removable, which is not an option with the Xperia Z Ultra.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 features Android 4.3 Jelly Bean on-board, which, until the recently announced Android 4.4 KitKat is released, is still the latest version of Android. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Samsung device without the TouchWiz UI overlay and its numerous features. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 includes all Galaxy S4 features, plus some new features such as Scrapbook, S Finder, Pen Window, and My Magazine, along with a lot of new (upgraded) S-Pen related apps, such as Air Command, Action Memo, and Screenwrite.
